Identify the cutting end and dimensions

State whether the tool has a square end or a specified corner radius. Record cutter diameter, flute count, length of cut, overall length and shank diameter separately. The cutting length is not the overall tool length; a long shank does not make the entire projection available for cutting.

Describe the pocket, wall or profile

Provide the material grade, feature depth, internal-corner requirement and available access. Explain whether you need a repeat cutter, roughing tool or finishing tool. Include the existing manufacturer code, substrate and coating where known, rather than selecting an alternative solely because it has the same diameter or number of flutes.

Confirm entry and holder compatibility

Plunging, ramping and side-cutting capabilities must come from the particular tool's documentation. State the intended operation and holder system so connection and usable reach can be checked. PMI assesses the stated sourcing requirement; cutting data and toolpath approval remain specific to the selected cutter, machine and workholding arrangement.

Questions about your requirement

Is an end mill the same as a drill?

No. A cutter's ability to mill sideways does not establish that it can drill axially. Confirm the documented entry capability for the exact end mill before selecting it for that operation.

What should I send when replacing a carbide end mill?

Send its complete code, diameter, end profile, cutting length and shank details, plus the material and operation. Include the current product data sheet if available.
