State the thread standard, nominal diameter, pitch or threads per inch, handedness and tolerance class where specified. Distinguish internal from external threads, and parallel from tapered forms. Include the required thread length, available hole depth and material grade; a nominal thread size alone leaves important selection details unresolved.
Identify the cutter and machine capability
Provide the tool diameter, cutting profile, reach and shank or connection, preferably using the full manufacturer designation. Thread milling requires suitable coordinated machine movement and programming support. Confirm these against the actual control and machine documentation rather than assuming that a machine capable of tapping supports the same thread-milling process.
Check scope before considering an alternative
The thread forms and sizes a cutter can produce depend on its design and documented application range. Do not assume one thread mill covers all pitches or both internal and external work.
